It was when he became a professional magician that he named himself “Harry Houdini”, after a French magician who went by the name Jean Eugene Robert-Houdini, after he had read about him in 1890.

As time went by, his expertise extended to escapes from ropes from heights, chains, straitjackets underwater and many others. He started his performance with escaping from handcuffs and as a result, he was referred to as “Harry Handcuff Houdini” in some quarters. He was a Hungarian-born American escape artist, illusionist and stunt performer who was noted in different parts of the world for his breathtaking and spine-chilling acts of escape.
